I don’t know how you feel about the subject but I know I’m more than delighted that Illinois finally passed the ban on smoking in all public places last year. I can now breath a healthy sigh of relief where ever I choose to go in our Joliet community. And yes, I mean in more ways than one.
I was so sick of going to a Joliet restaurant or any Illinois restaurant for that matter and having to breath in other people’s smoke.
Yes, most places had no smoking sections but I think that is a contradiction in terms. Just because they had a section where people couldn’t smoke didn’t mean us nonsmokers weren’t breathing in smoke and harming our health.
However, traveling still posses a healthy lifestyle problem since there are many states that have yet to put such a law into their books. I do hope these last hold outs realize how much they force us nonsmokers to jeopardize our own health when we venture out.
These laws still allowing smoking leaves us nonsmokers with the only alternative of being forced to stay at home in order to avoid not only the unpleasantness but the health risk from smoke as well.
Can Joliet, Illinois Enforce This Smoking Ban?
Luckily, we now have the much needed legislation to protect our health here in Illinois but… (There always seems to be a but in there somewhere.) But I’m afraid our new Illinois governor, Pat Quinn might have just watered down our hopes for smoke free environments.
It seems that our new governor has changed or as some say “clarified” the law.
The violation of this law is no longer a criminal offense. So, my worry is, “What will now stop people from smoking in public places when there is little more than a slap on the wrist for violating it?”
I mean, I don’t want to see smokers put in jail for violating our Illinois no smoking law but a hefty fine can go a long way toward motivating people to change their behavior.
There are Many Stop Smoking Programs Available
With all of the smoking cessation programs available today right here in Joliet and the rest of Illinois, smokers have many opportunities and ways to stop smoking. And in the process save their own and their families health as well as everyone else in the world.
My wish is that our somewhat new law is enforced so us nonsmokers can continue to enjoy restaurants, entertainment and other public facilities right here in Joliet as well as other parts of IL in this healthy smoke free way.
